Baby Steps: How to wean yourself off meat 2

So, the pledge to choose the veggie alternative over meat was pretty easy huh?
Well, hopefully this next one will you get you another baby step closer to saying goddbe to meat forever!

Today, I pledge to eat in a vegetarian or vegan restaurant
and I'll invite a non-vegetarian with me!

How simple is that?
Eating at a vegetarian/ vegan restaurant will open your (and their) eyes to the fact that veg food is NOT boring, there's a huge variety of healthier, more ethical food out there for us to try!
And once they see how great it is, they'll be more willing to support you. (Speaking from experience i'd say support is not  absolutely essential but it is really helpful.)
It will also be supporting a cause that we (no doubt) are passionate about!

So today, skip the KFC or the beef bistro and head to a Maoz or any veggie restaurant near you, there must be one!
If there isn't one, just cook a veggie meal at home and have a dinner party!
This will really show people that it's the kind of lifestyle that's simple, humane, and REALLY TASTY :D

I don't know where ya'll are reading from (but i'd be glad to know in the comments!) but here are some websites that have vegan/vegetarian restaurant guides!

http://www.happycow.net/

Honestly, there are TONS. It would be reallllly hard for you not to find one :)

International Elephant Day

As a blog dedicated to the love and respect of animals, I thought I should let everyone know that today is the day dedicated to the love and support of these large, beautiful and endangered animals. .In 1979 there were an estimated 1.3 million African elephants. Today, only 470,000- less than half of that- remain, some authorities even estimate the number to be considerably lower. Elephants are being killed for a number of reasons, some highly publicised, and others- not so much.

Elephants, we know, are facing poaching for their tusks which are used to make ivory. This barabric pratice involves the elephant being killed for less than 2% of its full body- it is extreemely wasteful and extremely cruel. The loss of more than half a million elephants in a decade was due primarily to killing for ivory. The ivory trade- which is most popular in Asia, and from which most of the ivory is obtained from Africa- is responsible for the deaths of thousands of elephants anually.

I was shocked today to learn of another reason why elephants are being killed these days- for their meat.
In January, Two wild elephants were found slaughtered in a national park in western Thailand, alerting authorities to the new practice of consuming elephant meat
"The poachers took away the elephants' sex organs and trunks ... for human consumption," Damrong Phidet, director-general of Thailand's wildlife agency, told The Associated Press. Some meat was to be consumed without cooking, like "elephant sashimi," he said
Elephant Sashimi- it just sounds so absurd- why? Is what I wondered, why would anyone want to eat an elephant? Well, according to the article on Daily News, some Asian cultures believe that eating the elephants sexual organs boosts ones libido or sexual prowess.
Well, this just makes me sick to my stomach, honestly killing an endangered animal and therefore speeding up the road to extinction all for a libido enhancer?  Try some vanilla candles, or maybe some figs? Just please, leave the elephants out of it.

And don't buy ivory either.

Olympic Fever!

It's official. London 2012 has taken over my life. Who else loves the rush, the excitement, the patriotism of the olympics? It truly is an amazing event, and what makes it even more amazing is the almost super-human power the athletes display, showing amazing dedication, strength and skill in their sports. Impressive. But what is even more impressive is an athlete who can do that on a vegetarian diet, proving to the world that meat does NOT equal strength.
So todays inspirational celebrity is Lizzie Armistead, who was the first medal winner for Great Britian, when she won her silver medal for cycling.
Read more about her inspirational story on my Inspirational Celebrities tab, and feel free to tell me your views on London 2012!

Babay Steps: How to wean yourself off meat

Most experts agree that, although it works for some, quitting meat cold turkey ussually results in a confused body and even withdrawal syptoms. So thats probably not the best way to become vegan or vegetarian. Thats where my baby steps plan comes in (I'm really excited I thought of this!!). The plan is to cut or substitute one thing each week (or twice a week if you are feeling totally hardcore.) Every week I'm going to post a suggestion as to what you can do to cut off that meat from your life, and also some sub-tips to do along with your main goal just for fun :)
So, we'll start with a relatively small one today:

Today, I pledge to eat the veggie burger instead of the beef or chicken.

This one is quite simple because veggie burgers are so delicious, and in many burger joints they do have that option. Veggie burgers are not only minus the cruelty, but they also have loads of other one-ups on beef or chicken burgeres like:

1. Lower in fat and calories!
Woop woop! Who doesn't like to hear those words? In fact many beef burgers contain 10g or more of fat, and the vegetable alternatives average at 3 or 4g- less than half!

2. Rich in fibre
Fibre comes from the cellulose found in the cell wall of evrery plant cell- so every veggie burger is packed with fibre. The meat alternative-not so much.

3. Less cholesterol
Veggie burgers have significantly less "bad" cholesterol compared to their (especially red) meat alternatives. Actually, some ingredients in veggie burgers, like soy, contain phytochemicals that reduce the levels of LDL or "bad" cholesterol in the body

So, the mini-goal this week is to choose the veggie burger over the meaat- this can also apply for any other veggie alternative! To help you, theres a delishh veggie burger recipe from Cooking Light on my recipes page!

Been gone long

Hey, I haven't posted anything here in ages and that's cos I had a bit of a personal crisis, of meat-eating porportions :/ i'm not talking a full U-turn back into my meat-eating ways. No. More like a temporary stint with chicken. Needless to say I was quite ashamed of myself and felt like a hypocrite, but when I think about my cause its still as strong as ever, whether I've eaten chicken or not. I do, however need to appreciate the discipline and passion it takes to be veggie and I just want to give a massive green salute to all my peeps out there who have gone years without eating meat. For me, its been almost 2 years, and they certainly have not been perfect (I have given into the temptation on more than one occasion) but it is still a belief I hold very dear to my heart and I will always continue to strive for that total meat-free perfection-actually, all-animal-product-free perfection, because that is what I see as strength, as passion and as the truest form of love for animals.

Baby Steps

Baby steps is all it takes to get that meat right off your plate!

OK, so maybe you might be thinking that it's going to be REALLY hard to become a vegetarian...well i've got news for you..it's really not!
Before I became veg I literally ate meat at EVERY meal. I'm talking bacon for breakfast, chicken for lunch and pork chops for dinner. My whole family eats meat. I stressed out a lot about how much I thought I was going to miss meat and put off the decision for a LONG time...until one day I just decided to do it!

My first attempt was full-blown immediate cut-off of all meat products. And that worked.....for exactly 11 and a half days. So when I chose to try again I was more smart about it. These are the baby steps I took to become a vegetarian.

1. Cut out red meat
Because it's not really my favourite and it's also the most unhealthy

2.Cut out fish
Also not my favorite

3.Cut out pork
Letting go of those ribs....

4.Cut out chicken
This was definitely the hardest...I LOVED chicken. It took me about 2 months to let it go.

This worked for me...and whenever I feel i'm about to loose sight of why I chose to do it, I play back scenes in my head of all the videos and all the information I've read about being veggie- that really helps. I imagine the blood and the pigs screaming and I know that never again in my life (or at least the foreseeable future) will I eat meat.

So, what I'm trying to say is that trying to move things to fast will make it harder to keep up in the long term. I don't want being vegetarian to be just a phase in my life y'know? I want it to be my new and improved lifestyle :)

Don't rush things! Baby steps....baby steps...:)

27th January- Holocaust Memorial Day

This Friday is the annual International Holocaust Memorial Day.

It's a day to remember the 6 million people that lost their lives, and the millions more who suffered during the Holocaust, Nazi persecution, and the more recent genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda and Darfur.
The Holocaust and all subsequent genocides are dark parts of our history that we hope and pray will never be repeated.

You might be wondering why I'm bringing this up on a blog dedicated to vegetarianism and animal rights?

Isn't it obvious?

In the Holocaust, the Nazi's killed millions of Jews who were too weak to fight back or speak up for themselves.

In the Holocaust, violence and destruction took over the lives of peaceful men, women and children, who were people just the same as the ones who caused so much death. They were people with real feelings, families, thoughts, happiness and sadness.

Yet all that was disregarded because of the Nazi ideals that they were not worthy of life, that they were mere instruments that should be disposed of or treated cruelly at the very most.

The Jews lived in tiny cramped surroundings, with poor sanitation. Diseases were rampant. The old, sick and any that were seen as weak were simply killed.

Sound familiar?

Every year, over 50 billion animals are killed for food alone. The Holocaust lasted 12 years. 600billion animals would be killed in 12 years. That is 1 million times more people than were killed in the Holocaust.
Animals cant stand up for themselves against us.

The life in an factory farm and slaughterhouse is one of cramped surroundings, barely enough space to move or  even stand up. Animals are routinely beaten, branded, drugged, force-fed and then, when they are fat enough, or if they are weak, they face their final fate.

Animals may not be humans, but they have feelings too. They too have families, thoughts, happiness and sadness.

But we disregard all that, because to most humans, animals are mere instruments that can be disposed of or treated cruelly at least. But we refuse to see that, we refuse to think of the murder that goes into the food that we eat.

Everybody agrees that the Holocaust was the work of evil. It was a hateful genocide that we all hope will never be repeated.

I hope that one day humans look back at the murder of animals as we do on the Holocaust, because to animals, all humans are Nazi's.

New Years Resolutions

Happy 2012 everyone!
Here are some ideas for some animal-friendly new years resolutions!

1. Pledge to be Veg
Being a vegetarian is one of the best things you can do do help animals. You can start slowly by cutting out red meat first, then moving on to other meats. Being a vegetarian ensures healthier, guilt free meals, and you can save over 100 animals a year!

2. Go vegan!
If you've been a vegetairian for a long time, maybe it's time to cut out all animal products. I haven't yet got there but I know I will someday and I'm really looking forward to having absolutely 0% cruelty in my life!

3.Clean out your closet
Animals fur, wool and skin is for them to wear, not us! If you have any clothes that required an animal to die or suffer, maybe it's time to get rid of it.

4. Start a campaign
choose anything that you're passionate about and just go for it,  and don't give up! If you're looking for ideas, I recently got one of the restaurants at my school to start serving vegetarian alternatives, and I'm planning a campaign against Nestea's animal testing!

5. Tell someone
This is probably the easiest one to do. Tell someone who seems generally interested about animal rights about becoming a vegetarian and it's amazing benefits. Dont be discouraged by all the people who will dissagree, believe me, I've met A LOT. just stay strong and you might change their minds!

6. Boycott animal testing
If you know a company tests on animals, don't buy their products. And tell your friends and family not to buy them either! (I'm still trying to convince my brother to stop using Axe :) You can even send an e-mail to the company directors or post it on their facebook page!

7. Cut out dissection
If you're in school or university, you really don't have to cut up that cute dead mouse, and maybe, like the awesome people at Conneticut University, you can persuade your school to stop it completely.
Check out this video about the horrors of dissection:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNLEsDcNTPM

8.Skip a visit to:
The Ringling Bro's Circus - where elephants are beaten, hit, poked, prodded, and jabbed with sharp hooks, sometimes until bloody. Ringling breaks the spirit of elephants when they're vulnerable babies who should still be with their mothers. Unsuspecting parents planning a family trip to the circus don't know about the violent training sessions with ropes, bullhooks, and electric shock prods that elephants endure.
www.RinglingBeatsAnimals.com
Seaworld- Sea World has been involved in illegal and unethical actions to assure their parks are well stocked with killer whales-who die younger and more frequently than they do in the sea. They are kept in cramped spaces with baarely enough space to turn around- and stolen from oceans where they can swim and live like they should
Horse Races- Horse racing is a world of injuries, drug abuse, gruesome breakdowns, and slaughter. Animals are force fed steroids to make them grom bigger than natural, whipped repeatedly and, over 10,000 of these horses in the USA alone, are slaughtered each year, when they are "past their peak"

9. Pet Matters
If you're thinking about getting a pet this year, please adopt. There are millions of animals that are killed in shelters because they have no home. You can save one of them. The pet trade treats animals as mere moneymaking commodities to mass produce and peddle for profit. Animals are routinely denied socialization, exercise, and even basic veterinary care in this cruel, money-hungry industry. Please dont cage birds- birds long for freedom and flight- caging birds is denying them their most basic instincts
Do not chain your dogs, thisis one of the cruelest punishments imaginable for social animals who need and deserve companionship, exercise, and mental stimulation. It can also turn dogs into ticking time bombs: Many people, especially children, have been bitten, mauled, or killed by chained dogs
Declawing, shock collars, ear cropping and tail docking are all cruel unecessary practices that need to be stopped.
And finally, neutering your pet prevents more animals ending up homeless. Its as simple as Animal Birth Control!

10.  Love all animals, equally
Whether it's a dog or a pig, a cat or a chicken, all animals feel, love, and deserve to live. Just because an animal is not a pet, doesn't mean it should end up on a plate, in a laboratory, or being forced to entertain us. Stand up for the animals you love, and maybe the ones, like snakes, that maybe aren't so easy to love- because they all deserve a chance.

Have a happy and animal-friendly 2012!
xxx Cynthia

Be an Activist- With Free Supplies!

"Never be silent
Because if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem
Speak up! Just because animals can't say what they are feeling, doesn't mean they don't feel at all.
Tell someone, show someone, educate someone
Because once they know, they can never not know
And they will have the burden of the cruelty they carry
Until they stand up and do something about it." - Me :)

Slide-shows: If you would like me to send you a slideshow on Vegetarianism, Animal Testing, Animals used for entertainment or The Fur Trade, please comment below and I would be happy to e-mail one to you.

Posters: I have made 3 posters about Life in a Slaughterhouse, Benefits of Vegetarianism and Common Myths,. If you would like one please comment below.

Videos: There are many passionate and thought-provoking videos out there. I have yet to make one, but I am planning to very soon. Comment and tell me what you would like to see in it, and I will try my best to include it.. So far I've decided to try and expose myths about the meat industry by vising a slaughterhouse and videotaping the horrors inside. Once I'm brave enough to do it!

If you've made any posters, videos, slide-shows or anything to show the cruelty animals face- that is too often ignored, I would absolutely love to see them!

Peace, Love, Paws.

Inspirational Celebrity: Sir Paul McCartney

Sir Paul McCartney has been vegetarian for 34 years
He speaks about his being a vegetarian:
One day we were having Sunday lunch - we were still meat-eaters, just building a home with the kids and that - and Linda was a really good meat cook.
We were eating roast lamb for Sunday lunch and it was the lambing season and there were all these beautiful little lambs gamboling around.

Then we just looked at the lamb on our plate and looked at them outside again and thought "we're eating one of those little things that is gaily running around outside". It just struck us, and we said "Wait a minute maybe we don't want to do this".
And that was it, that was the big turning point and we said we'd give up meat

You see these signs in America saying "real meat for real people" but I think that's just funny.
I notice those sort of campaigns and I notice it implies that people like us are wimps - which I pretty much know I'm not. I remember James Garner did a series of commercials saying "real men eat real meat", doing the "rabbit food" joke. And a while after that campaign ended he had a heart attack. But to give him the benefit of the doubt, I'm sure he didn't know what he was doing.

I don't think people realise that when they're eating meat they don't want to think that this animal you're eating has had its throat slit, or that it's died in pain that it's been hung upside down and bled. When people start talking about that at meal-times you say, "oh come on, leave it out
".
You want your chicken pre-packed and clean; women do not want to stuff their hands up into a chicken and pull out the giblets. People try to hide the fact that they are actually eating something that had a face and a heart, something that had a soul.

In most of the books you read it holds that animals don't have souls - that's something I don't agree with. I think it's so pompous of mankind to pronounce that. What? Has somebody got inside an animal's head and found out?

You see my point is that we've won the race on earth. Humans have won. There's no other animal, no species, is ever going to give us a problem. No race of spiders could ever take us over. We could zap 'em we've got the gear. There's no elephants ever going to rule us, we've got guns for them - we've got atomic bombs for God's sake. Any time we want to lose a species, we are the winners we can do it.
But we're not noble in our success - and I think this is going to be the interesting new phase. That's what we've got to look forward to: a nobility in success.
It's not "be a good loser, son", it's "be a good winner now".
I look forward to the time when we can suddenly think, "hey, we can relax a bit, we don't have to keep hating these things".

People say fish don't have feelings. Come on! The human race really is the most pompous thing going; it's funny, it's amusing. It's definitely not serious - it's too wild to be serious.

It's very convenient, I think, to hide it all away. We want our meat clean, we want it pre-packed, no giblets, from the supermarket and all that. We want clean meat - but unfortunately there's no such thing...

But I have faith things will change.

Lets Take a Lesson from Charlottes Web

Charlotte's Web is an award-winning children's novel and movie by acclaimed American author E. B. White, about a pig named Wilbur who is saved from beingslaughtered by an intelligent spider named Charlotte.
The novel tells the story of a pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte. When Wilbur is in danger of being slaughtered by the farmer, Charlotte writes messages praising Wilbur (such as "Some Pig") in her web in order to persuade the farmer to let him live.
When the old sheep in the barn cellar tells Wilbur that he is going to be killed and eaten at Christmas, he turns to Charlotte for help. Thanks to Charlotte's efforts, and with the assistance of the gluttonous rat Templeton, Wilbur not only lives, but goes to the county fair with Charlotte and wins a prize.

Charlotte, a tiny barn spider, saved the life of a pig who would otherwise have become someones Christmas pork. This heartwarming tale really moved me and got me thinking, why cant WE be more like Charlotte? Why cant WE stand up for the millions of animals being killed every year, why cant WE help save their miserable short lives and instead turn them into prize-winners with full and happy lives?

Pigs are intelligent, inquisitive, funny, happy and humble creatures, just like Wilbur. But we don't WANT to see that do we? Does it comfort us to put it out of out minds while we eat that pork chop? The reality is that pigs do not deserve to be eaten, they deserve to live full and fulfilling lives with their families and friends.

It may seem idealistic, but why not? The easiest way to do this is to stop eating them, spread the word about how amazing these creatures are and how their lives are being WASTED.

Why can't we be like Charlotte?

Amazing Animals: Cows

In the U.S. alone, over 42 million cows are killed in the meat and dairy industry each year. That works out to about 79 cows every hour! And what many people dont know is that cows are very intelligent and social animals, they have feelings and emotions. they like to make friends and even hold grudges against other cows that have treated them badly.
So that steak on your plate didn't come from nowhere, it came from a living breathing creature that is both complex and beautiful. Here are some facts about the amazing animal that is a cow.

There are about 920 different breeds of cows in the world. They were domesticated about 5,000 years ago
And each cow is different and has a different personality. Some are shy while others are bold and friendly.

Cows can live 25 years. You can guess the age of a cow that has horns by counting the number of rings on the horns.

Cows have spots called Holstein spots, these are like fingerprints, no two cows have identical Holstein spots.

Cows have almost total 360 degree panoramic vision and are able to see colors, except red. They can detect odors up to 5 miles away. Cows can hear lower and higher frequencies better than humans.

The strongest bond between cows, much like humans, is the mother-calf bond which intensifies over the years as they spend more time with each other. A mother usually raises her calf as the new member of her herd and they grow up together.

Cows are very social animals. They form large herds and make friendships over time in their herd. They "moo"  and use different body positions and facial expressions to communicate with each other.

Research has shown that cows are very clever animals and understand cause-and -effect relationships which means they are able to think about the consequences of their actions and judge what is right or wrong. They can learn to operate simple machines such as drinking fountains or levers.

Cows love to think and solve problems and are know to jump up or get excited when they have found a solution to their problems.

Cows choose leaders in their herds not based on size or strength, but based on social-skills, intelligence and self-confidence among other things.

Like all animals, cows value their lives, they do not want to die. Cows have gone to extraordinary lengths to escape from slaughterhouses. For more about this please read the Fight for their Lives stories.

Cows are beautiful, clever and social creatures, and they are worth far more than a steak or hamburger.

Veggie to Vegan

There's a few different types of vegetarians out there..some more strict than others, and the divide is not always so clear. So i did some research and here are the main vegetarian groups:

VEGETARIAN:Vegetarian is a broad term used to describe a person who doesn't eat meat, poultry, fish, or seafood.

SEMI-VEGETARIAN:Semi-Vegetarian means the person consumes dairy products, eggs, chicken and fish but not other animal flesh.

PESCATARIAN: This is someone who does not eat any animal flesh apart from fish, and does eat eggs and dairy

POLLOTARIAN: Someone who eats chicken, eggs and dairy but no other animal flesh.

LACTO-OVO VEGETARIAN: Does not eat any animal flesh including fish and chicken, but does eat eggs and milk
(This is the largest group of vegetarians)

OVO-VEGETARIAN: Does not eat any animal flesh including fish and chicken or dairy products, but does eat eggs

LACTO-VEGETARIAN: Does not eat any animal flesh including fish and chicken, also does not eat eggs, but drinks milk

VEGAN: Do not eat any animal flesh including chicken and fish or any animal by-products which includes eggs and dairy. They also do not eat meat by-products such as gelatin, some also do not eat yeast or honey or even some types of sugar and wine because they are made using animal products, whether or not they contain animal products at the end.

So which category do you fall under?
Remember whatever category you or other people fall under, that we all make a difference, and we all choose to be vegan or vegetarian for reasons as different as our diets.

What People Say

When I told my family I was going veg, they thought i was going crazy..my mum even started calling me vegetable for a while! :)
You're probably thinking about how hard it will be for you to be the only vegetarian in your family, but trust me, it really is NOT THAT HARD!
People will always have an opinion on your choice that they feel they must express but if you don't take things too seriously you'll learn to brush away stupid comments.
Here are some things that my friends and family have said, you might be able to relate:

"You do know that animals don't have a soul right?"

"Don't you miss chicken wings and spare ribs and sausages?"

"God made animals for us to eat and do whatever we want with"

"You're not really making a difference, animals will still get killed!"

"You're going to die of hunger"

"Where are you going to get your protein from? You're going to stay the same height forever"

"Are you sure that's possible?"

"If you don't eat the cows, they're going to keep farting which causes global warming!"

And there are dozens more!

What I'm trying to say is, people can be REALLY unsuportive at times, and it's easy to tell yourself that they're right, but whenever you're thinking about caving in just because of other people think, remember the reason why YOU chose to change.
One of the reasons why I changed?

Animals are my friends... and I don't eat my friends.  ~George Bernard Shaw

Going Veg = Going Green

Cos vegetables are green so that should be right, right? :) I didn't even think about the meat industry and global warming (except the thing about cows farts :) but here are some kinda crazy facts about the meat industries contribution to the big GW

"According to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off U.S. roads." -  awesome right?

Livestock production leaves a hefty carbon footprint, accounting for 18 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than all the world’s cars & SUVs combined.
- Thats a lot of bad air!

Animal agriculture consumes 1/3 of fossil fuels produced in the United States. According to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the production of one calorie of animal protein requires more than 10 times the fossil fuel input as a calorie of plant protein.

According to scientists at the Smithsonian Institution, seven football fields' worth of land is bulldozed every minute to create more room for farmed animals and the crops that feed them - Deforastation of billions of acres every year to feed the agricultural industry is increasing CO2 emissions and using up vital land

Each day, factory farms produce billions of pounds of manure, which ends up in lakes, rivers, and drinking water. Farmed animals produce about 130 times as much excrement as does the entire human population of the United States—87,000 pounds of waste per second! - Thats the true BULLSHIT right there!

In Conclusion, MEAT'S NOT GREEN

A recent United Nations report concluded that a global shift toward a vegan diet is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change. Going Green is something we all need to do, so instead of buying a hybrid or solar panels, why dont we all just leave meat off our plates?

Save the animals.
Save the planet.
Save ourselves.

Meet your Meat

What a clever name :) And that is exactly what this video does..It shows you where your pork chops and chicken wings come from..This video is what motivated me to become a vegetarian and change my carnivorous ways. It shows the lives of the animals before and during their slaughter...it shows their sad lives in cramped cages and filthy conditions and the routine cruelty imposed on billions of animals yearly. This video made me cry, it made me angry it almost made me vomit but most importantly, it made me change :)
